As I was preparing for Sunday I was reminded yet again that this radical journey we are on is not about us. It is and always will be about the fact that Jesus is the Son of God and everything we do in this life is about Jesus Christ. Jesus said to Peter in Matthew 16:18 “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” What a promise he has given us. The only condition to this promise is wholehearted servant hood based on our belief. Our obedience is crucial as a Christian. So the more we obey and believe that Jesus is the Son of God, the stronger the church is. So many people say they believe but their lives are far form it. The two key words here are “I” and “My” and neither one refers to you or I. If we could just establish that the church belongs to Jesus and it is He who does the building, we would see the true church stand against the gates of Hades. As it is now we are loosing that battle. In reality we are loosing because the church has become about you and I instead of “I” and “My”. We must again make Peter’s declaration that Jesus is the Son of God and all that goes with it, His word. Until we go back to scriptural holiness we will not be able to make this declaration because so many look everywhere else except the words of Jesus. We need to humble ourselves before God and turn from our wicked ways so that His church may be built. The radical Christian knows that the church is not about them but about Jesus Christ. That simple piece of information changes everything from leadership to the crowds that follow. Instead of saying “what’s in it for me?” we are humbled before God in expectation of the immeasurable things he will do.
