Last night while waiting to pick up my wife from her shift at the hospital, I was scanning the radio stations for something interesting and I came across Randy’s Backman’s Vinyl Tap on CBC radio. This caught my attention, as his topic was God, angels and the spiritual. Just as I tuned in he started talking about a song written by Burton Cummings after his visit to the Cathedral of St. Thomas in New York. He said he felt a presence when he entered the church and sat in the back row. He then writes a song called I’m Scared. One of the verses says, “I'm scared, you know I'm shakin', I'm layin' awake thinkin' about it now, I'm terrified. Never been much on religion. But I sure enough just fell down on my knees” Now I really do not know how this experience changed him other than going solo, but the gist of this is we need to be scared, terrified and shakin’ before God. We must be very afraid of God. We live in a time were we have lost the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord keeps us from sinning. (Exodus 20:20). The Guess Who (Burton Cummings) also had a song called “Undun” where one line says “Too many churches and not enough truth” In our day there really is no fear of God nor is it being taught. The fear of God is the beginning of knowledge. (Proverbs 1:7) I was reading Genesis 17 today and when God said, “I am God Almighty” Abraham fell facedown. Sadly I was thinking how do I read the bible and not be affected by this. Personally I felt saddened about my own life that I do not have enough of the fear of the Lord. This feel good / entertaining church culture we live in is going to bring disaster upon us as a church unless we change. Yesterday our topic for Palm Sunday was Unafraid. To be totally unafraid of anything we must be afraid, even terrified of the God we serve. This changes everything. In our culture people are not even afraid of the thought that being separated form God is a bad thing. Even hell does not scare them, which is total and eternal separation from God. If we started each day and continued with a posture facedown in prayer our days would be different. No I am not talking about crawling around on our hands and knees but facing each day with an attitude that is face down posture before God, so that everything we do is done before and for God.  This changes our trust and faith levels. So as you read the word of God and think about God, make sure you have evaluated your level of fear. Psalm 86:11 “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”
